What is Kano Prioritization?

Kano Prioritization is a product development framework that categorizes customer preferences for product features based on their potential to generate satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Developed by Professor Noriaki Kano in the 1980s, it helps businesses understand which features are essential, which will improve satisfaction, and which will delight customers.

The model distinguishes between different types of customer expectations, moving beyond a simple linear relationship between functionality and satisfaction. By classifying features, organizations can strategically allocate resources to maximize customer delight and competitive advantage.

This framework is particularly valuable for product managers and development teams. It guides them in making informed decisions about feature inclusion and prioritization in product roadmaps, ensuring focus on elements that deliver the highest customer value.

Definition

Kano Prioritization is a strategic framework used in product development to classify customer preferences for product features, optimizing satisfaction and resource allocation.

Key Takeaways

  • Kano Prioritization categorizes product features into five distinct types based on their impact on customer satisfaction.
  • It helps identify “must-be” features that prevent dissatisfaction and “excitement” features that delight customers.
  • The model provides a structured approach for prioritizing development efforts to maximize customer value and product success.
  • It moves beyond simple functionality to understand the emotional impact of features on users.
  • Applying Kano Prioritization can lead to improved customer loyalty and effective resource allocation.

Understanding Kano Prioritization

Kano Prioritization is built upon the premise that not all features contribute to customer satisfaction equally. Professor Kano identified five primary categories of customer attributes or features:

  • Basic (Must-be) Attributes: These are the fundamental expectations customers have for a product. Their absence causes significant dissatisfaction, but their presence does not lead to increased satisfaction; they are simply expected. For example, a car must have brakes.
  • Performance (One-dimensional) Attributes: The more of these attributes present, the greater the satisfaction; conversely, their absence leads to dissatisfaction. Satisfaction is proportional to the level of functionality. An example is the fuel efficiency of a car.
  • Excitement (Attractive) Attributes: These features are unexpected by customers, and their presence leads to significant delight and satisfaction. Their absence, however, does not cause dissatisfaction because customers didn’t expect them. A new, innovative feature in a smartphone falls into this category.
  • Indifferent Attributes: These features are neither good nor bad; their presence or absence makes no significant difference to customer satisfaction.
  • Reverse Attributes: The presence of these features actually leads to dissatisfaction, while their absence or removal leads to satisfaction. This might include overly complex or unnecessary functionalities.

Teams typically conduct Kano analysis through surveys, asking customers about their feelings if a feature is present and if it is absent. The responses are then plotted on a Kano evaluation grid to classify each feature accordingly.

Formula (If Applicable)

The Kano Model does not rely on a traditional mathematical formula but rather on a structured qualitative and quantitative analysis of customer responses. The core
