SEATTLE, United States – Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet initiative, Project Kuiper, now rebranded as Amazon Leo, has significantly advanced its deployment, nearing 400 satellites in orbit. The company confirmed that its constellation reached 396 units following a successful launch of 29 additional satellites on July 2, 2026, via an Atlas V rocket. This milestone positions Amazon for an anticipated rollout of its satellite broadband service later this year, intensifying competition within the aerospace communications sector.

Amazon holds a license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy a constellation of 3,232 satellites. The original terms required 50 percent of this planned constellation to be in orbit by July 30, 2026. However, Amazon secured an extension from the FCC, moving the deployment deadline for these 3,232 satellites to July 2029.

While Starlink maintains a significant lead in deployed satellites, Amazon’s entry is expected to intensify competition, particularly regarding service quality and pricing. Amazon has yet to disclose its service pricing, whereas Starlink’s U.S. residential plans range up to $130 per month, with variable equipment costs.

Strategic Acquisitions and Market Expansion

Beyond broadband, Amazon expanded its satellite communication ambitions by acquiring Globalstar for over $11.5 billion in April 2026. Globalstar operates a constellation of 24 satellites and provides network services for Apple’s satellite features, introduced with the iPhone 14 in 2022. This acquisition provides Amazon with a foothold in the direct-to-device satellite communications market, broadening its competitive scope.
