Huawei

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. was founded in 1987 and manufactures telecommunications network equipment, enterprise technology and consumer devices. It is privately held and headquartered in Shenzhen, China.

The company is among the largest suppliers of the equipment that carries mobile networks, and it also builds handsets, laptops and cloud services. Export restrictions imposed by the United States cut its access to certain chips and software and forced it to rebuild parts of its supply chain and its mobile software.

Much of Africa’s mobile network infrastructure runs on Huawei equipment. That makes questions about financing, maintenance and long-term support commercially important to operators, and politically charged well beyond them.
