Samsung

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. traces its parent group to 1938 and manufactures consumer electronics, semiconductors and displays. It is listed in Seoul and headquartered in Suwon, South Korea.

The company is unusual in being both a major device maker and a major component supplier, producing memory chips and display panels that it sells to competitors as well as using in its own phones, televisions and appliances. Memory is a cyclical business whose swings can dominate the group’s results regardless of how the consumer division performs.

Samsung’s handsets carry a large share of the African smartphone market, which makes its pricing and product decisions relevant to how people on the continent actually get online.
