Botswana Seeks Expanded Role in Lesotho Diamond Beneficiation, Targets Regional Hub Status

GABORONE, BOTSWANA – Botswana is actively pursuing a larger role in diamond beneficiation for Lesotho, positioning itself as a regional hub for sorting, valuation, and other value-adding services. This strategic move aims to leverage Botswana’s established expertise to maximize economic returns from diamonds produced in neighboring Lesotho.

The ambition was highlighted during Lesotho Prime Minister Samuel Matekane’s visit to Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTC Botswana) on June 18, which formed part of broader bilateral engagements hosted by Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko. Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, addressed delegates during the tour, emphasizing the initiative as a critical component of a regional industrial strategy designed to retain more mineral value within Southern Africa.

Welcoming the Lesotho delegation, Minister Kenewendo described DTC Botswana as the world’s most extensive and sophisticated rough diamond sorting and valuation enterprise. She underscored Botswana’s comprehensive capabilities across the natural diamond value chain and its potential to support enhanced regional cooperation.

Kenewendo articulated that regional beneficiation can unlock substantial value by transforming raw materials into high-value finished products locally. This process is expected to create jobs, foster technological innovation, and reinforce Southern Africa’s standing in the global diamond market. Her remarks pointed to significant opportunities in combining Lesotho’s renowned production of high-value rough diamonds with Botswana’s established beneficiation services.

Lesotho has garnered an international reputation for consistently producing some of the world’s highest-value gem-quality diamonds by price per carat. Minister Kenewendo cited key operations such as Lets’eng, Liqhobong, Kao, Kolo, and Mothae, noting that the Kingdom continues to supply exceptional stones to international markets. She drew parallels between the two nations’ mineral sectors, suggesting that deeper collaboration could bolster industrial development and improve long-term economic resilience.

“From the famed Orapa and Jwaneng mines to Lets’eng and Mothae, the natural diamond sectors of our countries present a wealth of opportunity,” Kenewendo stated. She added that these assets represent not only economic potential but also a foundation for substantial and sustainable growth for both nations.

Kenewendo further argued that regional cooperation should extend beyond mining to encompass the development of integrated mineral value chains and resilient regional supply chains for minerals and energy products.
