WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES – NASA has announced a partnership with Relativity Space for the 2028 Aeolus mission to Mars, which will carry advanced scientific instruments aboard a commercial orbiter. This collaboration highlights NASA’s strategic pivot towards commercial aerospace companies, even as Relativity Space’s primary launch vehicle, the Terran R, has yet to achieve Earth orbit.

The Aeolus mission aims to significantly enhance understanding of the Martian atmosphere, with data crucial for future crewed and uncrewed landings. Relativity Space will provide the rocket, spacecraft, and cruise operations, while NASA will manage the payload and instrument operations for at least one Martian year.

The Aeolus mission payload will consist of four NASA-built instruments: a Doppler wind and temperature-sounder, a thermal limb sounder, a surface radiometric sensor package, and a wide-field context camera. These instruments are designed to collect detailed environmental data on Martian dust, winds, temperature, and seasonal atmospheric behavior. This data will directly inform the design of entry, descent, and landing systems, contributing to safer and more predictable mission planning for astronauts.

NASA’s Ames Research Center holds responsibility for the design, construction, and integration of the mission’s scientific payload. The agency’s commitment to supporting instrument operations for a minimum of one Martian year signifies the long-term scientific objectives of the Aeolus endeavor.

The partnership, while promising, introduces a degree of risk, given that Relativity Space’s Terran R rocket has not yet completed an orbital flight. The company’s prior Terran 1 rocket successfully passed the 100 km Kármán line but experienced an issue during its second stage burn, failing to reach orbit. Relativity Space has been developing the medium-to-heavy-lift reusable Terran R since 2023, with its inaugural launch potentially occurring this year.
