This mission marks a pivotal step for the company’s ambitious lunar and orbital transport goals, according to a report by The Register.

SpaceX plans a 90-minute launch window beginning at 2245 UTC on Thursday, July 16. The mission will for the first time carry next-generation Starlink V3 satellites, deploying them during the vehicle’s sub-orbital trajectory. These 20 satellites are designed to extend solar arrays and antennas, establishing high-capacity laser connections with the wider Starlink constellation, as reported by The Register.

Six of the deployed satellites will feature a suite of cameras to observe Starship’s heat shield during flight. SpaceX has reportedly painted some tiles white on the vehicle to simulate missing tiles, serving as targets for these cameras during the test. The satellites, following a sub-orbital path, are expected to burn up in the atmosphere approximately 20 minutes post-deployment.

Correcting Prior Anomalies

The upcoming flight follows issues observed during Flight Test 12 in May, particularly with the Super Heavy Booster. The booster failed to execute a soft touchdown in the Gulf of Mexico. SpaceX attributed this to slight differences in engine startup, causing the booster’s directional flip to be approximately 90 degrees off target.

After the incorrect flip, five of the 33 booster engines failed to relight, resulting in an early termination of the boostback burn and a mishap. This incident prompted the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to mandate an investigation before further Starship-Super Heavy launches could proceed.

Starship also experienced the loss of one of its three Raptor engines after stage separation during Flight 12, though it still achieved its planned suborbital trajectory. SpaceX deliberately chose not to relight one of the Raptor engines during that suborbital flight, a maneuver critical for validating the vehicle’s capability to enter orbit reliably.

SpaceX has implemented several hardware and operational modifications to address these interconnected causes. The company states it has modified the startup sequence to enhance robustness against timing variability and to more reliably achieve the desired directional flip. Hardware modifications have also been made to improve engine re-light reliability, according to The Register’s reporting.

FAA Clearance and Strategic Importance

Neither the Super Heavy Booster nor the Starship vehicle will be recovered on this flight. The booster is expected to conduct a controlled descent into the Gulf of Mexico, while Starship will attempt a controlled re-entry and splashdown in the Indian Ocean, consistent with previous test flight plans.

The FAA confirmed that its investigation into the SpaceX Starship Flight 12 launch mishap has concluded. The administration found no reports of public injury or damage to public property and accepted SpaceX’s findings and corrective actions. The final mishap report cited heat effects on propulsion system components during ascent and erroneous engine alarm system settings as the most probable root causes for the Super Heavy booster’s loss.

SpaceX identified four corrective actions, including vehicle hardware and software configuration updates to prevent reoccurrence. With these actions in place, the FAA has granted approval for SpaceX to proceed with Starship Flight 13 launch operations, provided all safety and licensing requirements are met.
