The Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923 and produces and distributes entertainment across film, television, streaming, parks and consumer products. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
The group owns some of the most valuable intellectual property in entertainment and monetises each property repeatedly: in cinemas, on its streaming services, through merchandise, and in its theme parks and cruise business. The parks division has historically been the most profitable, while streaming was built at heavy initial cost to defend the audience relationship directly.
Disney is a working lesson in what owning intellectual property is worth over decades, and in how expensive it is to move an established business onto a new distribution model.
