Google LLC, founded in 1998, operates the search engine, the Android mobile operating system, the Chrome browser, YouTube, and the Google Cloud platform. Since a 2015 restructuring it has been a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.
Advertising remains the engine. Search advertising and YouTube advertising are sold against user intent and attention, and the surrounding products, maps, mail, mobile and browser, feed that system by keeping people inside it. Cloud services and subscriptions form a smaller but growing second line.
Google is the single largest source of discovery for most businesses that publish anything online, which makes changes to how it ranks, summarises or answers questions a commercial event rather than a technical one.
